A Luxury Safari in South Africa

Madikwe Game Reserve offers a chance to see the Big 5 in all their glory while you are traveling in style. Home to 66 mammal species and 300 kinds of birds, you are sure to stumble across countless wild residents as you trek across the vales in conducted game drives, only to return to the comfort of Luxury Retreats’ villas in South Africa.

The Players

So, I already mentioned the Big 5. Word to the wise: memorize them so you don’t get mistaken for a rank amateur (lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, rhinos). Needless to say, your guide will be busy whisking you around whenever a “lion sighting” gets radioed in. But, let’s take a moment to look at a few more underrated, but equally awesome animal friends. Take the water buffalo, for instance. Perhaps the most unassuming of the Big 5, Cape Buffalos have been given the nickname, “Black Death,” since they are known to have killed more big game hunters than any other African beast in history. Fortunately, you will just be shooting pictures and not rifles like in the olden days—but best not to startle these bad boys!

Next, while the sheer height of a giraffe is nothing short of impressive, the awkward gait of one accelerating into a full trot is one of those many marvels of nature that leave you grinning from ear to ear. You will also feel exhilarated as your driver holds pace with a herd of zebra galloping alongside your vehicle. Finally, and you may really need to stop the car for this one, but from time to time, as you make your way across the 185,000 acres of diverse vegetation, you might see a small dark sphere rolling along the ground, almost imperceptibly, like a mouse removing a splinter from the paw of a lion. Yes, you have chanced upon a dung beetle, diligently sculpting his abode. The experience can be quite comical to watch, as the balls sometimes reach five to six times the size of this “tiny Atlas.”

Morukuru Villas

Named after the mighty Morukuru tree, a kind of sentinel and protective force, this family of villas offer first class refinement within the ruggedness of the African veld. In fact, as the sun sets and you get cozy around the familiar comforts of home, you may just forget that somewhere out there, in the night, the hyenas are still lurking. You can relax though, at Luxury Retreats’ villas in South Africa, you have nothing to fear as you slip under the covers and rest your head for the next day.

Not only will you and your loved ones be boggled by the sheer magnificence of nature doing its thing in Africa, but you will be staying at a villa commited to its conservation. During your stay, don't hesitate to ask about the many local conservation and education initiatives that Morukuru takes part in.
